Abie Flaxman wins TR35

Abie Flaxman, professor of Global Health at UW’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) and adjunct professor of Computer Science & Engineering, is the latest in a long line of CSE-related researchers to be recognized as a member of Technology Review‘s TR35 – an annual listing of 35 top innovators under the age of 35. CSE’s Jon Froehlich wins 2012 UW Distinguished Dissertation Award

Jon Froehlich – a 2011 UW CSE Ph.D. alum now on the Computer Science faculty at the University of Maryland – has been named the recipient of the 2012 University of Washington Distinguished Dissertation Award. Froehlich’s dissertation, Sensing and Feedback of Everyday Activities to Promote Environmental Behaviors, was advised by James Landay and Shwetak Patel.   It focuses on creating new types of sensors to monitor and infer everyday human activity such as driving to work or taking a shower… Read more →

SoundWave in Popular Mechanics

SoundWave, a joint project of UW CSE and Microsoft Research, is featured in Popular Mechanics.  Hey, Shwetak is a licensed plumber and electrician, and worked on his own car in high school – what could be more natural? “Though using the Doppler effect to track human gestures has been around for a decade, it had always required customized equipment.  SoundWave eliminates the need for any specialized hardware, requiring only basic technology.” Read the article here.  Read more about the… Read more →

Emma Brunskill wins Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship

Congratulations to2000 UW CSE bachelors alumna Emma Brunskill, announced today as the recipient of a 2012 Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship. Each year, Microsoft Research selects a handful of the most promising young computer science faculty members from around the world for recognition and support through this program.
