Hot topic: University of Washington researchers win Distinguished Paper Award for temperature-sensing app FeverPhone

Joe Breda holds a smartphone against a patient's head to show how the FeverPhone app works. A team of researchers in the Allen School’s UbiComp Lab and UW School of Medicine developed the app FeverPhone that turns smartphones into thermometers without the need for additional hardware. The research, which was originally published in the Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies, received an IMWUT Distinguished Paper Award at the ACM International Joint Conference on Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing/International Symposium on Wearable Computing (UbiComp/ISWC) in October. ‘A great citizen of the research community’: Allen School Ph.D. student Anandghan Waghmare receives Gaetano Borriello Outstanding Student Award

Anandghan Waghmare holds out his arm to display a smartwatch modified with additional, tiny sensors affixed to the armband in front of a poster on an easel In honor of the late Allen School professor Gaetano Borriello, whose work focused on applying mobile technologies to tackle issues of global equity and social and environmental justice, the ubiquitous computing community each year recognizes Ph.D. students who are following in his footsteps. This year, those footsteps led back to the Allen School when Ph.D. student Anandghan Waghmare won the 2024 Gaetano Borriello Outstanding Student Award at the ACM International Joint Conference on Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing/International Symposium on Wearable Computing. One medical model to rule them all: AI takes center stage at Allen School’s 2024 Research Showcase

Sheng Wang onstage speaking to a crowd of people seated at round tables with a slide behind him titled Four Paradigms in AI for Medicine While the Allen School’s annual Research Showcase and Open House highlights both the breadth and depth of computing innovation at the state’s flagship university, the 2024 event at the University of Washington last week had a decidedly AI flavor. From a presentation on advances in AI for medicine, to technical sessions devoted to topics such as safety and sustainability, to the over 100 student research projects featured at the evening poster session, the school’s work to advance the foundations of AI and its ever-expanding range of applications took center stage. ‘The best chance for the biggest impact’: Shwetak Patel inducted into SIGCHI Academy for advancing health, sustainability and interaction research

Shwetak Patel wearing a grey button-down shirt over a t-shirt smiling outdoors with foliage behind him. When it comes to the field of human-computer interaction, University of Washington professor Shwetak Patel aims, in his own words, “to think outside the box and challenge existing assumptions.” Patel has repeatedly put that philosophy into practice, inventing entirely new areas of research — and even new industries — in the process. Last week, the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on Computer Human Interaction inducted Patel into the SIGCHI Academy in honor of his trailblazing contributions in health, sustainability and interaction research. ‘There’s so much great research here’: The case for open language models and other food for thought from the Allen School’s 2023 Research Showcase

A crowd of people cluster around posters on easels on a building landing. The camera focuses on one person explaining a poster's contents to another person viewing it. The poster's content is not visible in the photo. New approaches to finetuning large language models that decrease computational burden while enhancing performance. A robotic arm that safely delivers a forkful of food to someone's mouth. A system that combines wireless earbuds and algorithms into a low-cost hearing screening tool. These are just a sample of the nearly 60 projects that were on display during the Allen School’s Research Showcase and Open House last week. The display capped off a day-long celebration of computing innovations that are advancing the field and benefiting society. Nearly 300 Industry Affiliate partners, alumni and friends participated in the event, which included sessions devoted to computer science ethics, intelligent transportation, computing for sustainability, computing for health, natural language processing and more. UW researchers show how to tap into the sensing capabilities of any smartphone to screen for prediabetes

A person holds a black smartphone with the rear of the phone facing the camera in their left hand, and a narrow rectangular glucose test strip with various tiny circuitry attached in the other hand. Only the person's hands and wrists are visible in the frame. The shot is professionally lit against a dark grey, almost black, background. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, one out of every three adults in the United States have prediabetes, a condition marked by elevated blood sugar levels that could lead to the development of type 2 diabetes. The good news is that, if detected early, prediabetes can be reversed through lifestyle changes such as improved diet and exercise. The bad news? Eight out of 10 Americans with prediabetes don’t know that they have it... Read more →
