Pinpoint Utility Meter Featured on NAE broadcast and podcast

UW CSE’s Shwetak Patel‘s “pinpoint utility meter” is featured on the National Academy of Engineering’s weekly radio broadcast and podcast. “Ever wonder why you can get itemized bills for credit cards and telephone calls but not electricity and water?  A new technology promises that possibility. “The engineering breakthrough would allow just one easy-to-install sensor per utility.  Simply plug into an outlet to monitor your house’s entire electric system.  The inventor, Shwetak Patel of the University of Washington, says everything… Read more →

Hydrosense on NPR

NPR’s “Living on Earth” features UW CSE’s Hydrosense technology: “In the heat of summer, droughts bring water rationing and limits on outdoor use. A new household sensor could soon detect every drip coming out of your pipes, making it easier to conserve water. “Professor Shwetak Patel from the University of Washington has invented a gadget that he calls Hydrosense …  A single Hydrosense device can detect water use from anywhere in the house.” Listen to the story here.… Read more →

UW CSE’s Hydrosense in Technology Review

“When a cell phone or credit-card bill arrives, each call or purchase is itemized, making it possible to track trends in calling or spending, which is especially helpful if you use a phone plan with limited minutes or are trying to stick to a budget. Within the next few years, household utilities could be itemized as well, allowing residents to track their usage and see which devices utilize the most electricity, water, or gas. New sensor technology that consists of… Read more →
