Allen School kicks off Computer Science Education Week with Code.org and the Computer Science Teachers Association
The Allen School teamed up with Code.org and the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) on Monday to host the kickoff event marking the 2018 start of Computer Science Education Week and the largest-ever Hour of Code. The event featured special guests Melinda Gates, co-chair and trustee of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Brad Smith, president and chief legal officer of Microsoft.

On a typical day nearly 150 tradesmen and tradeswomen are at work on the Bill & Melinda Gates Center for Computer Science & Engineering. Every day we marvel their amazing work, and periodically we demonstrate it with a bbq lunch and special recognition for some folks who have gone above and beyond in contributing to the great culture of the team.

Every year, the Allen School recognizes two alumni who have made outstanding contributions to computing and to society. In the case of the Allen School, recent investments include substantial support for the Bill & Melinda Gates Center – a second building that will double our space when it opens in January – and multiple years of funding for enrollment growth that have more than doubled our degree capacity. Allen School and HCDE senior Kaitlyn Zhou awarded College of Engineering Dean’s Medal
Kaitlyn Zhou, a senior who will graduate from the University of Washington this spring with bachelor’s degrees in computer science and human centered design and engineering, has been awarded the College of Engineering’s Dean’s Medal for Academic Excellence. Each year, the college selects two students to receive this award recognition of their academic achievement, leadership, and engagement in research and extra-curricular activities. In keeping with the Allen School’s commitment to provide an unparalleled educational experience to students, many undergraduates participate in leading-edge research in our labs.
