The University of Washington Board of Regents has approved the first interdisciplinary master’s degree program to be offered through the Global Innovation Exchange (GIX), a partnership between the UW and Tsinghua University launched last spring with support from Microsoft. The new Master of Science in Technology Innovation (MSTI) degree was developed with the collaboration of UW CSE and other units within the College of Engineering, the Foster School of Business, the iSchool and the School of Law.

UW CSE’s Noah Smith receives UW Innovation Award to map the “perspectives landscape”
UW CSE professor Noah Smith, an expert in natural language processing, has received a 2016 Innovation Award from the University of Washington’s Office of Research to create a large-scale visualization of people’s perspectives on current events and issues based on digital text.
By developing tools to map the “perspectives landscape” from the vast amounts of text data available online, Smith will be able to reveal differences in framing that can affect public attitudes. His research will advance the state… Read more →

UW’s Ubicomp Lab and Oculus VR develop magnetic sensing technology for virtual reality
The Ubiquitous Computing Lab led by UW CSE and EE professor Shwetak Patel has teamed up with virtual reality pioneer Oculus VR on the development of a novel system for precisely tracking finger movements that could pave the way for a more immersive and elegant virtual reality experience.

UW’s and Microsoft’s HyperCam featured on KING 5 and KOMO 4 news
HyperCam, the new low-cost hyperspectral imaging camera developed by UW’s Ubiquitous Computing Lab and Microsoft Research, recently got some screen time of its own thanks to KING 5 and KOMO 4 news. Crews from our local NBC and ABC stations interviewed UW CSE Ph.D. student Mayank Goel, who demonstrated how HyperCam works and explained its potential commercial applications.

Each year, the Madrona Prize is awarded to students participating in UW CSE’s Open House whose work shows the greatest potential for commercialization.
